Lake Karakol is located within the Ustyurt Nature Reserve, about 15 kilometers from the center of Aktau. Kaldybai Mamayev, deputy director of the reserve, told Otpan News that 15,000 to 20,000 flamingos arrive at the lake during the season. Interestingly, the plumage of young flamingos is gray. They turn pink over time.
Flamingos stop in the Mangystau region twice a year, in spring and fall. Lake Karakol serves as a stopover for the birds during their migration. In spring, they head to Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve in northern Kazakhstan, while in fall they fly to Iran.
