Paternity rumor results in heavy fine for Karaganda pensioner

A resident of Karaganda, central Kazakhstan, was fined 484,400 tenge (about $1,100) for spreading false information about another woman. In the presence of others, she claimed that the woman had «given birth to a child not by her husband.» The woman subsequently defended her reputation in court.

The court established that the incident occurred on June 12, when the defendant shared details of the victim’s private life with third parties. The court found the information to be knowingly false and damaging to the victim’s honor and dignity.

«While in one of Karaganda’s neighborhoods, M. disseminated knowingly false information regarding the victim, K., in the presence of third parties — information that defamed K.’s honor and dignity — specifically by stating that the latter had ‘given birth to a child not by her husband,’» the court said.

According to the court, the woman’s guilt was established by witness testimony, the administrative offense report and other case materials.

The Karaganda resident was found guilty of slander and ordered to pay a fine of 484,400 tenge. The court’s ruling has entered into legal force.
