Kazakhstani ballet takes ‘Spartacus’ to ancient Aspendos Theatre

The Abai Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theatre performed at the ancient Aspendos Theatre in Turkey, presenting Aram Khachaturian’s ballet «Spartacus.» Kursiv LifeStyle looks at the performance set against the backdrop of the ancient stone stands.

The performance took place at the historic Aspendos Theatre. Its nearly 2,000-year-old stone stands were filled with spectators who came to watch the Kazakhstani troupe.

According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Culture, «Spartacus» performances drew around 30,000 attendees. The Abai Theatre took part in the 33rd International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival at the invitation of Turkey’s General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet.

Zaurbek Raibaev choreographed the performance, with Arkhat Ashirbek, Aiman Yegizbayeva, Syrym Ayupov and Zhanel Tukeyeva in the principal roles.

The performance also featured the theatre’s ballet company and symphony orchestra, with the orchestra conducted by Honored Worker of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Baibusinov.

Built in the 2nd century A.D. during the Roman Empire, the theatre has survived to this day and is still used as a venue for concerts and theatrical performances.
