NASA has published new photographs of Mars taken by the Perseverance rover. The images show a hilly landscape with reddish-brown soil along the inner rim of Jezero Crater. They depict part of an ancient Martian lakebed, with hills and soil varying in depth and texture.
NASA noted that studying Martian rocks helps scientists understand how water once existed on the planet and whether the area could have supported life. That is why Perseverance carefully examines not only the landscape but also the rocks, which can reveal clues about Mars’ past.
Mars or Kazakhstan?
The Martian landscapes in these photographs bear a striking resemblance to those found in western Kazakhstan (Bozzhyra, Mangystau).

Dry hills, reddish soil and an almost complete absence of vegetation are common there, too. It’s no wonder foreign tourists specifically travel to Kazakhstan to see landscapes that look as if they belong on another planet.
