A small dog that went missing in Yellowstone National Park has been reunited with her owners after surviving alone for more than a month, the Associated Press reported.
Luna, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier and Chihuahua mix, escaped from her family’s cabin on Sept. 10 while they were visiting the park. Her owners believe a housekeeping staff member accidentally opened the door while the family was away.
Over the next few weeks, people spotted Luna in different parts of Yellowstone. She crossed roads, wandered through employee housing and even entered lodges through automatic doors. Her family and local volunteers continued searching for her despite concerns about cold weather and wildlife, including predators such as coyotes, wolves and bears.
Katie Boucher, a volunteer who led the rescue effort, said Luna appeared to rely on strong survival instincts. Before being adopted, the dog had spent her first year living on the streets.
Volunteers eventually set up a live trap using clothing and bedding that carried the family’s scent. They avoided using food as bait to keep wildlife away. On Wednesday, Boucher and one of Luna’s owners found her safely inside.
Although Luna had lost some weight, she was alert and in good spirits after the examination.
