Kazakhstan’s diplomatic missions abroad have begun notifying foreign nationals of changes to the country’s immigration procedures. The country is launching the QazETA digital platform, which will require travelers to obtain an electronic entry permit.

Partners in the Eurasian Economic Union will not be exempt, and the new requirements will apply to all foreign nationals entering Kazakhstan under a visa-free regime.

Launch phases and transition period

The transition period will begin on Nov. 1, 2026, ahead of the platform’s full-scale launch. In the first phase, the system will be tested at Aktau International Airport and four road border checkpoints. In January 2027, the rollout will expand to the airports in Astana and Almaty. By March, the new procedures will be introduced at all remaining border checkpoints.

Until June 30, 2027, obtaining the permit will be voluntary. Starting July 1, the digital document will become mandatory for crossing the border.

How to obtain the permit

Travelers must apply through the QazETA mobile app at least 72 hours before their planned trip. The application process is free of charge, and the issued permit will be valid for six months.

Exemptions

Exemptions will apply to children under 16, people over 65, holders of residence and work permits, diplomats, transit passengers, and drivers of trucks and buses engaged in international transport.

‘Golden visas’

A draft law introducing so-called «golden visas» for major foreign investors and highly qualified specialists was previously presented at the Kurultai, Kazakhstan’s parliament.
