The country’s parliament approved military assistance to its neighbor

Mazhilis, the lower chamber of Kazakhstan’s parliament, has approved the draft law on ratification of the agreement between the governments of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on military-technical assistance with no compensation, according to the Interfax news agency.

The document was signed in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) on March 2, 2021.

«According to that agreement Kazakhstan is going to donate some defense materials, munitions and special equipment to Kyrgyzstan,» said Ruslan Shpekbayev, deputy minister of defense while speaking in the parliament.

The official noted that Kazakhstan has taken an obligation to deliver all these war materials to the Koytash settlement in Kyrgyzstan at its own expense.

«Due to some security threats and challenges in Central Asia, which is part of Collective Security Treaty Organization, defense materials and equipment from Kazakhstan is aimed at strengthening capabilities of the Kyrgyz military to fight back any possible invasion,» he said.

Kazakhstan must take into account threats such as the proliferation of extremism and terrorism, illicit trafficking of small arms and drugs, illegal immigration, flows of refugees and infiltration in the region of destructive elements, highlighted Shpekbayev.

On August 15, the Taliban movement in Afghanistan seized power in the country. This caused a growth of instability in the entire region.
